Alyssa Valentin is a fourth-year student at Arizona State University (ASU) pursuing a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Performance and Movement as well as a minor in Anthropology. Alyssa has always had a passion for dance, which only grew as a freshman at North High School where formal dance training began. Although she fell out of formal dance training after graduating from high school and did not restart till her junior year of university, this goes to show it is never too late to go after what you truly desire.
While attending ASU, Alyssa was able to develop her skills as a performer, creator, researcher, and learner through her eye-opening Performance and Movement BFA program. Alyssa’s movement specialties, Salsa and Hip Hop, have allowed her to acquire newfound values of authenticity, connection, and collective knowledge as an Afro-Latin inspired dancer and creator. She believes it is her responsibility to inspire others to be unapologetically themselves, through the use of movement and community engagement. She is inspired by the preservation of embodied knowledge through the use of movement, both personally as a half Mexican American half Puerto Rican young woman and culturally as an aspiring anthropologist.
As a performer, Alyssa is known for her fun personality and naturally flowy movement execution. She shows off her particular style through hip hop and has had the pleasure of battling at ASU’s Sol Power festival (2024, 2025). Alyssa also has found a deep passion for salsa on2 and through this passion has performed at ASU’s Latin Sol festival (2025). While at ASU, Alyssa has also been able to participate in a senior capstone showcase, Transitions, titled Heart of J, by choreographer Jose Solano (2025). While Alyssa is rigorously preparing for her own senior capstone showcase, she is excited to emerge as a choreographer with her first piece titled, Assembly Line Broken, coming to the stage March 2026.
Looking forward, Alyssa’s driven nature will allow her to dive deeper into her passion both as a dancer and an aspiring anthropologist. She is also committed to pursuing more performance opportunities and becoming a contributing member of the hip hop community. Remaining a student is her initiative as an artist not only to acquire cultural and historically accurate knowledge, but to be able to communicate this to future generations.
